The Fool

At the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland.

What are your perceptions of clowns and jesters? Are they figures of fun, or do they have a dark side?

To me, clowns have always had a slightly sinister edge to their characters, and this is explored with The Fool, the new exhibition at the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art. Amongst the exhibits are photographs, paintings, collages and sculptures.

My favourites were a series of paintings by the artist Moyna Flannigan (pictured), whose seemingly innocent paintings exhibit the dark side I have always seen in clowns. Her images are vivid and thought provoking.

There are images throughout the exhibition to make you laugh, but also to make you think of the darker elements of life.

Tears of a clown indeed.

The Fool runs to 19 September and admission is free.
